  4. Country Description: The Federated States of Micronesia (including the
  5. islands of Pohnpei, Kosrae, Truk, and Yap) is a constitutional democracy in
  6. free association with the United States.  Its economy is developing, and
  7. tourist facilities are available.

  9. Entry Requirements:  Proof of U.S. citizenship and identity are required for
  10. a tourist visit of up to one year.  Further information concerning specific
  11. requirements is available through the Embassy of the Federated States of
  12. Micronesia, 1725 N Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036, telephone (202) 223-
  13. 4383.

  15. Medical Facilities:  Health facilities in the Federated States of Micronesia
  16. are adequate for routine medical problems, but are limited in range and
  17. quality.  Doctors and hospitals may expect immediate cash payment for health
  18. services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the United
  19. States.  Supplemental medical insurance with coverage for specific overseas
  20. treatment and medical evacuation has proven useful.  The Medicaid/Medicare
  21. program does not provide payment of medical services outside the United
  22. States.  The international travelers hotline of the Centers for Disease
  23. Control at (404) 332-4559 has additional useful health information.

  25. Information on Crime: The crime rate in the Federated States of Micronesia
  26. is low.  The loss or theft abroad of a U.S. passport should be reported
  27. immediately to the local police, and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
  28. Useful information on guarding valuables and protecting personal security
  29. while traveling abroad is provided in the Department of State pamphlet, "A
  30. Safe Trip Abroad."  It is available from the Superintendent of Documents,
  31. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402.

  33. Drug Penalties: Travelers are subject to the law, and legal practices of the
  34. country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking
  35. in illegal drugs are strict, and convicted offenders can expect jail
  36. sentences and a fine.

  38. Registration:  Americans who register at the U.S. Embassy can obtain updated
  39. information on travel and security within the country.
